What a 1 is
A 1 is the number of origination. The pull is toward starting things, holding a direction before anyone else can see it, and working without a template. It tends to produce people who are difficult to manage and excellent to follow.

Independence hardening into isolation. A 1 will often refuse help long past the point where refusing it is expensive, and mistake stubbornness for conviction.
The work: Start the thing. Then let someone else in early enough that it survives you.
How life path 1 is calculated
A life path comes from the whole date of birth. Reduce the month, the day and the year each to a single digit, then add the three and reduce again, keeping 11, 22 and 33 whenever they appear.
Month 1 reduces to 1, day 4 to 4, year 1985 to 5. Then 1 + 4 + 5 = 10, which reduces to 1.
