Defined Root

You generate your own stress and drive at a consistent rate. Pressure is a fuel you are built to handle, and it does not go away when the task does.

Open or undefined Root

You amplify everyone else's urgency. An open Root rushes to be free of pressure, finishes things in order to escape them, and then finds the next pressure has already arrived.

The not-self theme: Hurrying. Doing things fast to be rid of them rather than at the pace they actually need.

What an open Root eventually becomes

An open Root eventually learns what is genuinely urgent, which almost nothing is, and becomes noticeably calm under pressure that flattens other people.

This is the part most people miss. An open centre is not a deficiency to be fixed. It is where you take in and amplify other people, which is uncomfortable for years and then becomes the thing you understand better than anyone with it defined.

The gates of the Root

9 of the 64 gates sit in this centre. Each is also a Gene Key, read as a Shadow, a Gift and a Siddhi rather than as a mechanic.

Centres, gates and channels come from the same tables the bodygraph is drawn from. Human Design was assembled in 1987; Six Mirrors reads it beside five older systems and shows where they agree.
