The arc of Key 20

Superficiality is talking about the thing instead of doing it. This key is the present moment, so its Gift is Self-Assurance that comes from acting now rather than rehearsing, and Presence is what is left when there is no gap between knowing and doing.

The two poles of Superficiality

A Shadow is never only one behaviour. Each has a repressive pole, where the energy collapses inward, and a reactive pole, where it fires outward. Most people live mainly in one and visit the other under stress, and recognising which is yours is where the contemplation actually starts.

Repressed, it observes life without entering it. Reactive, it acts constantly to avoid noticing anything.

Working with Superficiality

Superficiality and Self-Assurance are not two different energies. They are the same one at two frequencies, which is why the instruction is never to replace superficiality with self-assurance. You watch superficiality run, without arguing with it, until it stops being automatic. What is on the other side of that watching is self-assurance, and presence is the same thing again with nothing personal left in it.

Programming partner: Gene Key 34

Key 20 is paired with Key 34, which runs Force to Strength to Majesty. Partners sit opposite each other on the wheel of 64 and always move together, so superficiality and force tend to show up in the same person, in the same week, feeding each other.

The useful way to read the pair: when self-assurance is hard to reach, the block is often sitting in force rather than anywhere in Key 20. And strength is usually what makes self-assurance sustainable rather than occasional. Contemplating one without the other is the most common way this system gets used badly.
